We welcome all who are seeking God’s love and grace. We welcome all because God welcomes all, regardless of race or culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship status. We welcome all without regard to addictions, physical or mental health, imprisonment, socio-economic circumstances, or anything that too often divides us. Our unity is in Christ.

What is Holy Week?

Holy Week is the center of the church year — considered widely to be the most important time in the life of the church. It is during this week that we as a faith community recall the events that led up to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Participating in this ancient and holy practice helps us to relive the central story of our Christian faith and binds us to Christians throughout the generations and around the world.

Palm/Passion Sunday: We remember Jesus’ descent into Jerusalem and rejoice with the crowds waving palms and shouting “Hosanna!” Then there is a deliberate shift as we hear the first reading of the passion narrative–the story of Jesus’ crucifixion–from Luke. This pivot is a reminder of how quickly the crowds change from shouting “Hosanna” to shouting “crucify him.”

Maundy Thursday: “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for commandment as we remember Jesus’ command to love one another. This service marks the official end of Lent as we receive forgiveness, remember the institution of the Lord’s Supper, and are sent out to serve.

Good Friday: Marks the day when Jesus gave his life for the sake of the world. We hear again the story of the crucifixion, but this time from the Gospel of John instead of Luke. John’s gospel focuses on the victory of Christ from the cross and the hope we receive from it.

Easter Sunday: This is the day of resurrection–a joyous celebration of God’s victory over sin and death and the most important festival day in the entire church year. Jesus is alive and we, too, are given new life through him. Alleluia!

Who We Are

You may be wondering, ‘Why is it called Good Soil?’ Great question. Our name is grounded in the Parable of the Sower* in prayerful hope that our ministry offers good soil: a safe and vibrant place to hear the Word of God, be nourished in community, and grow in faith and love for God and all of God’s people and creation. Good Soil is a community of folks who gather to explore their faith and wrestle with what it means for their lives and for the world, from the neighborhood to the global community. Come grow with us!

*The Parable of the Sower is a story told by Jesus about the extravagant and unconditional love of God. It appears 3 times in the Bible: Matthew 13:1-9, Mark 4:1-9, and Luke 8:4-8.
